I have a copy of a Thomas Guthrie will, dated 9 Sep 1787. The will shows
James Watkins to be the executor. So there is no doubt this will is the
will of the above Thomas Guthrie. The will mentions his wife Mary, son
Cason, and daughters Mary Guthrie, Frances Day, and Elizabeth Peters. Elizabeth
must have been a widow since he mentions taking care of Elizabeth and Mary
as long as they remain unmarried. Also a certificate of probate was granted
on 20 Sep 1787. I had thought that after the death of his father Cason
might have started using the name Thomas. That perhaps Cason's name was
Thomas Cason Guthrie. However it appears that in 1814 Cason was granted
a licence to operate an ordinary, 1814 P Book 31 page 17. See Thomas' activity
below. So the following is a second Thomas and probably a first cousin
or brother to Cason.

The four Guthrie's above, John, John Jr., Thomas and Ephraim are the
only Guthrie's to appear on the 1820 Halifax Co. Virginia census. John
was number 063, John Jr. was 068, Thomas was 069, and Ephraim was 068.
This could indicate that John Jr., Thomas and Ephraim were brothers and
sons of John the elder.

- Nathaniel
- Charles
- Thomas
- Daniel
- Dennet

On the 1820 Virginia census of Halifax Co. the following:
- John 063
- John Jr. 068
- Thomas 069
- Ephram 088
In the 1782 and 1785 Halifax Co. Census only Travis and Thomas Guthrie
show up. Travis with 10 white and 2 slaves. Thomas with 7 white and no
slaves.
Dennett Guthrie should be searched for. It is not a common name and
might indicate where part of the family moved to. He is not found on the
1820 Virginia census although he married one Sally Hart in 1821.
I have have used the following marriages to reconstruct the family of
John Guthrey.
21 Dec 1815 William Hubbard and Elizabeth Guthrey da. of John Guthrey
who consents. Witnesses William Guthrey and John Guthrey.
Thomas Walton and Nancy Guthrey, da. of John Guthrie Sr. who consents.
Sur. Wm. Guthrey. Witnesses Wm. and John Jr.
22 Nov 1824 Archibald Rowlett and Rebecca Guthrey, da. of John Guthrey
Sr. who consents. Sur. Richard A. Guthrey. Witnesses Richard A. Guthrey
and John Guthrie Jr.
21 Jul 1810 Leanord Keeling and Patsy Guthrey. Sur. John Guthrie 5 Jan
1828 Richard A. Guthrey and Martha Toombs. Sur. Jas. H. Yeates. Witness
William Guthrey and Jas. H. Yeates. John Yeates consents. (There was an
earlier marriage of Thomas Toombs and Marthan Yeates with sur. John Yeates.
I believe William and John (jr) to be brothers to the above daughters of
John (Sr).

The Richard A. Guthrie shown in the 1850 census is not this person.
I believe that this Richard is dead in 1850 and is survived by his wife
Martha age 50 as shown on 1850 census # 681
In 1815 Travis Guthrey transferred land to Elijah, Dennett, William,
James and Samuel. P Book 32 Page 27. I assume these five to be his sons.
The marriage records of Polley and Betsy show them as daughters of Travis.
William Guthrey was a witness to the wedding of Polly. Mary is shown as
his wife in his will. The children of Elijah and Gartney are as shown in
the 1850 census of Halifax Co. VA. There would have probably been other
children between the time they married and 1827. I have the marriage record
for a Dennett m. to Sally Hart. The Dennett shown on the 1850 census cannot
be the same person. The wife of Dennet in the 1850 census is Sally and
she would have only been 11 in 1821.
