From Gruenloh's Settlement Geography in St. Charles County (St. Charles Library HR 977.839 p.36)

Foristell: In 1857, upon property owned by JA Davis, the town of Foristel was laid out. At different times in it's history it was called Snow Hill & Millville. Foristell is a railroad settlement, located on the Wabash Route, 26 miles west of St. Charles.

From Obituary of Alice Davis Simons (1942): "Old timers recall the old Davis house as one of the early landmarks of St. Charles Co., built many years before the construction through the farm of the old North Missouri Railroad, now the Wabash. The station at Foristell is located on a part of the land which was entered and acquired by Mrs. Simons' father, Joel Addison Davis, from the United States government about the year 1840. The site of the Christian Church at Foristell was also part of the original farm and was donated to the church by her father familiarly known as 'Uncle Addison.'

I have a very dim picture of the house, a large clapboard farmhouse. In the picture in front of the house are Frances Ann Guthrie Davis & husband Joel Addison, dau. Alice Davis Simons & husband Jim, grand-daughters Aurelia and Zola Tucker and a boy thought to be Vedie Tucker. Picture appears to have been taken around 1888. By my time more than half of the house had been torn down, and little by little the land had been sold until only a few acres plus what remained of the house and outbuildings was taken by the interstate highway dept. for the construction of an overpass about 1964.

According to my mother, Jewel Davis Bryant, "Grandmother Davis" (Frances Ann Guthrie) strongly encouraged her sons to go to college, teach school for a few years and then go into the mercantile business. This is exactly what my grandfather, Poletus, did. Sons Tom and Frank also conducted stores. I'm not sure whether or not they attended college (I think they did) and taught school. Until I read the 'Guthrie Book' I didn't know FA's father had stores. I guess that's where she got the idea! I don't know if any of FA's daughters attended college. Her grand-daughter Zola, who she raised, did grad. from college, and I think Aurelia did, too, but I'm not sure. Zola (with whom I was well acquainted) held her grandmother in high esteem, being grateful for the encouragement she received and the love of learning that was instilled in her, and the other children, as well.
