THOMAS GUTHRIE AND DESCENDANTS

Compiled by

CLARA HARRISON GUTHRIE

THOMAS GUTHRIE, son of James Guthrie and Bussell, (or Bissell), (see p. 216) in the earliest known record of him, appears in 1777 as a militiaman of Cumberland County, Pa." His name is found on the tax list of the same county in 1779. It is supposed that soon after this he moved to Virginia, following the usual route up the Cumberland Valley to the Potomac, crossing it at the site of Williamsport, Md., proceding up the Shenandoah to Winchester, then crossing over the eastern range of the Blue Ridge and so into Fauquier County, where it seems he lived for a number of years.'

Thomas Guthrie with his family moved from Fauquier County, Va., to Woodford County, Ky., about 1797. The journey was a long and difficult one. It is probable that they followed from Fauquier County to Winchester, the old pioneer trail that led from Alexandria, Va., to the latter place, thence up the Shenandoah and across the head waters of the James to Lexington, thence to Roanoke, to Wytheville, to Abington, to Moccasin Gap. There the pioneers crossed the Clinch River to the north and following a trail to the west reached Cumberland Gap at the tristates point of Virginia,

Tennessee, and Kentucky. Taking the Daniel Boone trail at Cumberland Gap, they followed it to Boonsboro, whence a days journey would carry them into the heart of Woodford County.' Their route of travel may have varied somewhat from the above but it is nearly certain that they used the chief routes of travel which have been mentioned.

Thomas Guthrie died in Woodford County, Ky., in 1837; his wife Mildred appears to have been deceased March, 1824, as she is not a party to the deed of Thomas, Sr., of that date to his son Thomas, Jr.

ChildrenIsaac Newton Guthrie wrote"My grandfather was Scotch Irish and his name was Thomas Guthrie and his wifeMildred Howell, to whom were born ten children, six boys and four girls." He then gives them in the following order:

1. Mary ("Polly") Guthrie, b. about 1773; m. John Frawer.

2. Thomas Guthrie, b. Oct. 8, 1775. (Below)

3. John Guthrie, b. about 1777, (p. 273).

4. James Guthrie, b. March 28, 1779, (p. 273).

5. Willam Guthrie, (p. 291).

6. Nancy Guthrie, b. 1785, (p. 291).

7.Elizabeth ("Betsey") Guthrie, b. April 30, 1787, (p. 293).

8. Mildred Guthrie, who m. Adam Montgomery, of Scott County, Ky.

9.Robert Guthrie, b. Dec. 8, 1794, (p. 294).

10.Caleb Guthrie, b. April 28, 1798, in Woodford County, Ky., (p. 296).

Thomas Guthrie, Jr., (above) as a young man moved with his father from Virginia to Woodford County, Ky., where in 1809 or earlier, he married Miss Lucy Wood. The records of the county show that Jan. 13, 1823, Robert Campbell and Elizabeth his wife

211

conveyed a tract of land in Woodford County to Thomas Guthrie.

Presumably this was Thomas, Jr. In the deed dated March, 1824, referred to above, Thomas Guthrie, Sr., conveyed to Thomas, Jr., a tract of land in said county on the waters of the Elkhorn, whereon the said Thomas Guthrie, Sr., was then living, and certain personal property.

Lucy Wood Guthrie died in Kentucky about 1830. Thomas Guthrie, Jr., married (2) Aug. 21, 1831, Mrs. Matilda Griffith, widow of Lieutenant Mordecai Griffith, who served in the Fifth Infantry of Kentucky, a regiment which was raised in 1808, and may have been in service in the War of 1812. The Griffiths had one childClarissa ("Claissa") Griffith, who was born May 16, 1822.

In 1834 or 1835, Thomas Guthrie, Jr., with part of his family including his wife and stepdaughter Clarissa Griffith, his eldest daughter Susan and her husband, removed from Kentucky to Missouri. He located first on a tract of land in Marion County, but not being satisfied, disposed of his land and removed to Monroe County. The year after he went to Missouri, he returned to Kentucky to collect his sale bills and while there was obliged to pay the note of a neighbor for three thousand dollars, having previously "went security" for this man. This left him in greatly straightened circumstances, but he set to work with a will to recover from the loss,

THOMAS OF THOMAS, SR. 269

and so far succeeded that at the time of his death he owned four hundred acres free from encumberances and was considered a "welltodo" man of that time.

Matilda Griffith Guthrie died Oct. 19, 1843, aged 65 years, 6 months, 19 days; is buried in Bryants Cemetery, Monroe County, Mo.' There were no children by this union.

Thomas Guthrie, Jr., married in his old age (3) "Widow Chancey." There were no children to this union.

Thomas Guthrie, Jr., died Sept. 28, 1848,' at Florida, in eastern Monroe County, Mo. The chief claim to fame of this place lies in the fact that it is the birthplace of Samuel Clemmens, popularly known as "Mark Twain."

In the early days there was a water power grist mill at Florida, to which people went for many miles around to have their corn ground. In order to accommodate those coming from a distance, the Miller had provided a bunkhouse where his patrons could lodge over night. Mr. Guthrie had gone to have some corn ground at the nlill and spent the evening with several men in the bunkhouse. He retired that night apparently in good health and spirits; the next morning was found dead in his bed. It was supposed that he died from heart failure. The remains were removed to his home, whence they were conveyed to their final resting place in Bryant's Cemetery, about four iuiles from Paris, the county seat of Monroe County. The cemetery is on the Paris and Louisiana pike.
