Jacob Guthrie, (p. 231) son of John Guthrie and Esther Dunn, was born in Brandywine Township, Chester County, Pa., May 3, 1801 He followed the sanw bade as his father and was a builder of carriages and wagons. When a young man he located in the Pequea Valley of eastern Lancaster County, Pa., near the old Pequea Presbyterian Church. This place is at no very great distance from the part of Chester County where he was born and grew up, probably not much more than thirty miles. During nearly all the time he lived in the Pequea Valley the Rev. John Wallace, a noted Presbyterian minister, was his pastor, in a pastorate which lasted for 3311 years.
Jacob Guthrie married about 1825, in the Pequea Valley, Miss Elizabeth ("Betsey") Diller, who was born Nov. 12, 1809, of German skek. She mms a very energetic, determined sort of a woman, bent on getting on in the world. She chaffed under the meagre returns of the shop and small farm, and when the oldest son John went west to Iowa and sent back glowing reports of the fertility of the soil, the opportunities of the new country, the rich prairies waiting to be developed, she said, "We will go." And go they did. In the Spring of 1854, having sold the shop and the little farm, they had some three hundred dollars in gold, a cow, a pig in a crate, chickens in a coop, bedding and clothing for nine, all save the cow loaded in a great Conostoga wagon which slowly but surely rumbled on to Pittsburgh. From there they traveled by a stern wheel river boat down the Ohio to the Mississippi and up it to Keokuk in southeastern Iowa. Here the son John was to meet them, but after waiting three days, "Aunt Betsey" again took the initiative, said she would wait no longer, purchased a one hone ouWt and they took the trail for Jasper County, the land of promise. On the second day the son John met them with a two horse wagon and they proceeded in more comfort to their destination. They located in the timber west of Newton, then a little pioneer settlement of less than one hundred inhabitants, now a bustling little city.
During the Civil War Jacob Guthrie served in the 37th Regiment of Iowa. It was known as the "Grey Beards," all the men in it being upwards of fortyfive years of age. This regiment was not engaged in the field, but served in guarding arsenals, prisoners of war and protecting cities along the Mississippi River.
Elizabeth (Diller) Guthrie died Sept. 25, 1876; Jacob Guthrie, Oct. 28, 1882. Both are buried in the beautiful cemetery of Newton, which was laid out on a part of the Guthrie land.
