With the state track meet just around the corner, several Bulldogs have great shots at bringing home medals. The state meet will be held May 2nd and 3rd at the Tulsa East Central high school.
Those qualifying for state are Logan Grinstead, Ty Pettitt, Nick West and Caleb Neal in the boy's divison and Rylee Rackley, Marissa Metz, Jennifer Nye and t he 3200 relaty team of Kari Smith, Jessica McCarville, Lacy Rankin and Marissa Metz.
In gearing up for the state meet the track teams had the regional track meet at Madill this past Saturday. The last regular season meet of the year was held at Velma-Alma on the 22nd.
At Velma the Sulphur track teams faced some tough competition. With schools like Washington, Marlow, Byng, Fox, and Cache the Bulldogs had to work for every medal they brought home. The Lady Bulldogs finished in eighth at the meet. Mercy Anderson picked up the ladies first medal of the day with a 51.20 time in the 300m hurdles. That time was good enough for fifth place for the freshman. The 1600m relay team placed fifth while the 3200m relay team did the same for the Lady Bulldogs. Rylee Rackley was her dominate self once again throwing 37' 8" in the shot put which was easily good enough for first place. Marissa Metz placed third in the pole vault with a jump of 8' to round out the scoring for the girls.
The boy's team finished fourth overall in team points. Cameron Gregory finished fifth in the 800m run to pick up the first medal for the boys squad on the day. The 1600m relay team came in third with a time of 3:39.27. Freshman Caleb Neal was fourth in the long jump with a jump of 20' 2". Two Bulldogs claimed medals in the pole vault. Aaron John was second with a jump of 11' 6" while Nick West placed fifth overall. Logan Grinstead won the shot put with a hurl of 50' 6". In the discus Grinstead nudged out Washington's James Winchester by a little over two feet with a throw 154' 11" to take home first place.
In the regional track meet last Saturday at Madill several Sulphur track members took home medals and qualified for the state meet next weekend. Rylee Rackley out threw everyone by nearly five feet to claim first in the shot put and qualify for the state tournament. The sophomore will be a heavy favorite to be the state champion in the event. Fellow sophomore Logan Grinstead won the shot put and the discus to qualify for the state tournament. Grinstead threw 49'41/2" in shot and 160' 7" in the discus. He will also have a great shot at bringing home gold in both events at the state tournament. Ty Pettit jumped 13' 6" in the pole vault (a new school record) to claim second in the event and has a great chance of medaling in the event at state as well. Pettit also finished second in the discus with a throw of 128' 11" to qualify for state. Freshman Caleb Neal would have won two out of the four regional long jump competitions with his jump of 19' 8". However, the competition at the Madill meet was extremely tough. Neal's jump put him in fourth place but he will qualify for the state track meet. Neal also squeezed into the state meet in the 110m hurdles with a time of 46.39. Marissa Metz vaulted 7' 6" to place fifth and was able to qualify for state as well. The girls 4x800m relay team made up of Keri Smith, Jessica McCarville, Marissa Metz, and Lacy Rankin made state with a fourth place finish and a time of 11:30.56. Nick West qualified for the state meet with fourth place finish and a jump of 11' 6".
