Here are a few programs that our help desk uses to help their computers run faster and more secure. Most of the help desk technicians use these programs. They keep them updated and run them frequently.
Mozilla Firefox - A free and open source web browser with many security features and add-ons. This program is used in place of your current web browser, most likely Internet Explorer.
Mozilla Thunderbird - A free and open source email client that is easy to set up and customize. This program is used in place of your current email client, most likely Outlook Express or Windows Live Mail.
Avast! Antivirus - A good anti-virus with a pay version aswell as a free version. This program will scan files as they are accessed. You should run a full manual scan frequently.
Malwarebytes - An anti-malware application that can thoroughly remove even the most advanced malware. It includes a number of features, including a built in protection monitor that blocks malicious processes before they even start. A free version is avaiable. If running the free version you must download updates and run the scan manually. This should be done frequently to keep your computer clean.
Spyware Blaster - A free program that prevents the installation of spyware and other potentially unwanted software. This program should be updated frequently.
CCleaner - A free program that keeps windows clean and working better. It cleans temporary files, history, cookies, and even your registry. You should update and run this program frequently.
Adblock Plus - This is an add-on to Mozilla Firefox. It prevents most malicious ads from appearing while you browser the internet. This addon is downloaded directly into Firefox.
