ARCHIBALD GUTHRIE
(P. 308)
An Archibald Guthrie was in the Cumberland Valley Settlement in the latter part of the Sixth Decade and served in the French and Indian War.
"A list of the Detachment of the Pennsylvania Regiment in Garrison at Fort Bedford under command of Col. Joseph Shippen, Jan. 24, 1760; Captain Armstrong's Company: Archibald Gutrie, private." (Pa. Arch., Ser. 5, vol. 1, p. 305.) Strange to say he is the only private named, presumably because he was a recruit. Others "drafted at Loudoun" (Fort Loudon) are mentioned. This Archibald could not be identical with the Archibald, who follows, since the latter was born in 1753, and was not old enough to serve in the French and Indian War. Perhaps the first was the father of the second Archibald.
Archibald Guthrie married in 1774, Rebecca Phillips. He took up land in Whiteley Township, Greene County, Pa. He was a soldier in the Revolutionary War and was wounded by an Indian at what is

JOHN GUTHRIE, (p. 384) brother of Daniel, the pioneer in Lawrence County, Ind., was born Nov. 8, 1785; married in Virginia, Elizabeth Flinn, daughter of Jacob Flinn. (See the Flinns, Allied Families). They moved to Boone County, Ky., about 1807 and in the Fall of 1809 he went with his brother Daniel to Indiana, assisted in building the cabin and with him the others returned for the winter to Kentucky. In February, 1810, he was one of the leaders of the caravan that set out from Kentucky for the new country. John walked, carrying his trusty rifle; Elizabeth rode horseback, a child in her arms and an older one, Jacob, behind her. They settled at Leesville and almost immediately began to be annoyed by the depredations of hostile Indians, who appearing in the daytime professed to be friendly but at night stole whatever they could, particularly horses, so that it was almost impossible for the settlers to keep them. A few years after the settlement the Indians made a daylight attack on it. Silas Guthrie writes as follows: "My grandfather, John Guthrie, and his brother-in-law, Riley Flinn, were one day engaged in making boards outside the fort at Leesville and were surprised by Indians. Grandfather was shot in the back, the bullet passing through the right lung, but he made his escape and lived for a number of years. Riley Flinn was captured and scalped, he lay in the rain all night and was still alive when they found him the next morning but died that day. Great grandfather Flinn,
a feeble old man, was with them and was taken prisoner by the Indians and carried to the northern part of the state along the Tippecanoe River, but in about three months he made his escape in a canoe down the Wabash to Vincennes, about six days journey and was too weak to get out of the canoe. He was carried in and cared for a few days until he regained his strength and he came through to Leesville in the same year he was taken prisoner, bringing with him the same axe that grandfather was chopping with when surprised by the Indians. I have often seen the axe and used it but don't know what became of it after grandmother died in 1867. It weighed about six pounds." Jane, second wife of Hugh, one of the sons of John, gives some additional information. She says that after John was shot he was able to run to a place near the fort
JACOB OF JOHN 397
where he collapsed. His wife, heedless of the danger to which she exposed herself, rushed out in the face of the Indian fire, lifted him up and carried him into the fort. She says that as soon as the Indians withdrew from the attack a man was sent on horseback to a point near New Albany, Ind., for a doctor who lived there. When the doctor ai-ri-%~e(i he wiped the wound out by drawing a silk handkerchief directly through the body of John Guthrie, thus saving his life. She says regarding the capture of Jacob Flinn that he was forced to carry a heavy kettle on his shoulders and head during the entire journey to the northern part of the state. This, together with the exposure and starvation which he endured while making his escape, caused him to go blind. However, he lived many years after the incident and died in the Leesville settlement.
John Guthrie obtained a title to his land in 1820. Up to this time, like the other early settlers, he was a "squatter" on it. He died Nov. 6, 1851; Elizabeth, June 5, 1867.
