Will of Reuben Jones, 1811 - Halifax Co. VA

In the name of God amen, I Reuben Jones of the County of Halifax and State of Virginia being sick and weak in body but of sound mind and disposing ... for which Ithank God and calling to mind the uncertainty of human life and being desirous to dispose of such worldly Estate as it has pleased God to bless men with I give, bequeath the same in ... as following...

Item, I give to my son Robert one bay horse and one shotgun to him and his heirs forever.

Item, I give to my daughter Lucy one negro boy by the name of Wiley to her and her heirs forever.

Item, I give to my daughter Sally one walnut desk to her and her heirs forever.

Item, I give to Milly Wilkins, wife of John Wilkins, fifty dollars to her and her heirs forever.

I lend to my beloved wife during her life or widowhood the tract of land I now live on containing 457 acres more or less lying on the water of Coleman Creek and at her demise or expiration of widowhood which ever may first happen I give the same to my son Robert to him and his heirs forever.

Also I lend to my wife for and during the time as before expressed nine negroes viz. ... Dick, Hed, Esther, Arron, Hannah, Sarah, Bill, Little Ned, and Jack and all the balance of my personal estate of every description be the same of what kind or nature used at her deceased or expiration of widowhood which may first happen as before expressed the same then to be sold to the highest bidder and the money to be equally divided amongst my children that is Polly, Sylvania, Phatsey, Lucy, Betsy, Jenny, Nancy, Robert, Eddy and Salley to be enjoyed by them forever.

It is my desire that the remaining parts of two tracts of land which I purchased of Daniel Loftis and Daniel C Goode lying on the waters of Hyco should be sold to the highest bidder as a creditof two years and the money arising therefrom to be applied to the discharge of legatees due from

me as Guardian to Betsy Jones, Edy Jones, Patsey Jones and William Jones, orphans of James Jones, Dec’d, Obadiah Overby orphan of Obediah Overby dec’d and the balance of any to be divided in the same manner as the money which arises from the sale of the negroes and other personal estate.

Lastly I do hereby approve my friends James Warren, William Parce, and Nathaniel Guthrie Executor of this my last will and testament hereby making all other as former wills or testaments by me heretofore made.

In witness whereof I have thereinto set my hand and affixed my seal this 13 day of July 1811.

MY Note: Larry J. Guthrie-January 2, 2005. Coleman Creek flows into the Hyco River at approximately 36 35 50 N by 78 53 37 W. This is about 5 miles SE of Cluster Springs in Halifax Co., VA.
