Index #1, loose deeds the following: John and Jane Guthery to Robert Daniel: Two acres for fifty shillings "lying on the north side of Briary Swamp bounded with the land of Katherine Young,
(Note the above John and Jane Guthrey is John Guthrie and Jane Mitcham of Middlesex Co., VA. John is the son of John Guthrie and Elizabeth Baskett. John was baptized July 28, 1689. John and Jane were married 5, August 4, 1710. Jane died April 22, 1722. John died in 1733.
Sept. 1719--John and Jane Guthery sold two acres of land to Robert Daniel. From the Middlesex Co., Deed Book 1687-1750, Gen. Index #1, loose deeds the following: John and Jane Guthery to Robert Daniel: Two acres for fifty shillings "lying on the north side of Briary Swamp bounded with the land of Katherine Young, widow, the Briary Swamp and a line of marked trees running from the sd Briary Swamp to the line of Katherine Young and adjoining upon the land of the sd. John Guttery, now in the actual possession of the sd. Robert Daniel... mark of John and Jane Guthrie.
At a court held for Middlesex County ye day of Sept., 1719.
Witnesses: Wm. Garwood, John Ragan, John Hunt
(My note: According to Wayne T. Guthrie Briary Swamp empties into Dragon Run about three miles east of Church View at a point very close to the Ware Bridge over Dragon. Dragon Run forms the boundary line between Middlesex County and King and Queen County.
1740--William Guthery, orphan of John Guthery, dec'd, is bound out to James Daniel, Jr. Christ Church Parish Records. William is the son of John Guthrie and Mary Shay. This is the same John that was married to Jane Mitcham above.
1744--William Guthrie, orphan of John Guthrey, dec'd, is now bound out to Robert Daniel. See 1740.
5 January 1747--Inventory of John Guthrie. From Middlesex Co., VA will Book C: Mary Guthrey and George Gueist adx. (Copy in hand). This will be the John Guthrie of John Guthrie and Jane Mitcham. Jane was dead at this time and his wife Mary was the adx. James Daniel was appointed to appraise the estate of John Guthrie dec'd. (Will Bk. C, pp. 392-394)
Note: The above John is the son of John Guthrie and Jane Mitcham. To clarify things. John married 3 times: Sarah Stiff(no children), Jane Mitcham(Jane, John and Nanny), and last Mary Shay(William died as infant, Garritt, Henry, William and James. John the elder died in 1733, John the son in 1747.
3 May 1757 George Daniel was appointed "guardian of Jane and Ann Guthrie, orphans of the Nash District on Adams Creek. (this is the area that became Person Co., NC)
2 October 1764--Richard Daniel and Margaret Gutery marrie. Surety James Worsham. Middlesex Co., VA Marriages.
And the following will of Benjamin Guthrie.
In the name of God Amen,
I Benjamen Guthrie of the Parish of Christ Church in the
county of Middlesex, Virginia being sick and weak in body,
but of ? ? ? , do make and ordain this my last will and
testament in all manner and form folllowing ?, that is to
say, I will that my debts and funeral charges be paid and
discharged by my executor herein after named.
ITEM I give and bequeath unto my sister Frances Tuggle,
my shoe buckles and blouse buttons.
ITEM I give and bequeath unto by brother John Guthrie of
the county of Gloucester all my wearing apparel execepting
my buckles providing ? ?, that should it appear that my
said brother John died before the making and writing of
this, it is my true desire that my wearing apparel already
mentioned, be equally divided amongst my surviving
brothers Samuel Guthrie and William Guthrie and William
Berry and John Berry.
ITEM I give unto John Berry, son of my sister Frances by
John Berry my ? ? buckles.
ITEM I give unto Samuel Daniel, son of William and Lucy
Daniel one hundred and fifty pounds Virginia currency for
his schooling.
ITEM I give and bequeath unto Cathy Daniel, daughter of
William and Lucy Daniel one hundred pounds Virginia
Currency for her schooling, but in case either of the two
last mentioned dhould die before the ? bequeathed should
be spent upon his or her schooling by my Executor, then it
is my will that the balance should go to the surviving
child to be ? on his or her education in such such manner
as to my executor shall appear advantageous to such ?.
Item I give or devise that as much money may remain in the
treasury of my Executor as will pay for the schooling of
James Stevens son of John Stevens, one year and a half
whenever he may be thought of sufficient age to be sent to
school.
Item I bestowe as much on Ann Callahan daughter of John
Callaham as will pay for one years schooling.
Item I bestowe on Betty ? daughter of John ? of the county
of ? as much money as will pay for one years schooling.
Item I give and bequeath unto my sister Margaret Daniel
Daniel one hundred pounds Virginia currency.
Item I It is my will and desire that all my Estate ? and
the money arising from such sale to be applied toward the
payments of my debts and ? ? before mention; and whatever
ballance or remainder there may be after dividing my debts
and wishes and ? . I do hereby leave all such Ballance,
residual or remainder to my Father and Mother during the
term of their natural lives, to have the use of the same,
and that should any if be left at theri death, such
ballance I desire may be divided equally amoung my
brothers, William and Samuel Guthrie and my Sister Ann
Bristow.
Lastly I do appoint Robert ? and Samuel Guthrie Executor
of this my last will and testement hereby revoking all
other will and testements .....
