John Augustus Guthrie, (p. 241) third child of John Dunn Guthrie and Thamsin (Kerlin) McFarlan, was a locomotive engineer on the Pennsylvania Railroad. He married Oct. 30, 1878, Ida May Morrell, who was born March 5, 1855, in Stanton, Del., and died April 5, 1931. John Augustus Guthrie died April 29, 1918, in Philadelphia, Pa., and with his two sons and wife is buried in Fernwood Cemetery.

S. Naval Reserves since 1925." He married Sept. 28, 1909, Gertrude S. Goerz, who was born May 9, 1882, in Brooklyn, N. Y., the daughter of George Edward Goerz. The latter was born Feb. 5, 1851, in Dorchester, Mass.; died Oct. 7, 1922; married Mary A. Wind, who was born July 5, 1855, in Norwich, Conn. Both of them were of German parentage. Charles D. Guthrie has rendered much assistance in developing the representation of his own and related families.
Mr. and Mrs. Charles D. Guthrie live in Brooklyn, N. Y., where their only child, Robert Edward Guthrie, was born July 31, 1914.
John Ivison Guthrie (above) married June 3, 1907, Martha McNelius, who was born May 17, 1889, in Johnstown, Pa. They live in Philadelphia, Pa., where their only child, Donald Morrell Guthrie, was born March 2, 1911.

She married June 14, 1878, Benjamin Franklin Evans, who was born June 23, 1852; died Jan. 7, 1918, in Harrisburg, Pa. She died Nov. 21, 1931, at her home in Harrisburg, Pa., after a short illness.

William Harrison Guthrie, (p. 241) fifth child of John Dunn Guthrie and Thamsin (Kerlin) McFarlan, when a young man went to Iowa with the intention of locating there but after spending some time in the home of his uncle Jacob Guthrie, in Jasper County, he returned to Pennsylvania. He went to work for the Pennsylvania Railroad and became a locomotive engineer. He married Eloise Reese, of Downingtown, Pa., who was born Jan. 8, 1862, and died at the age of 59 years. He was fatally scalded on his engine in a collision at Powellton Avenue, Philadelphia, Oct. 28, 1897. He died from the effects of his injuries, after intense suffering, at the Presbyterian Hospital, of Philadelphia, Nov. 7, 1897. He had one child Helen Guthrie, who was born Sept. 4, 1886, and died July 13, 1887. All are buried in Fernwood Cemetery.
Greer Thompson Guthrie, (p. 241) sixth child of John Dunn Guthrie and Thamsin (Kerlin) McFarlan, married (1) Oct. 17, 1880, Addie White, who was born Dec. 29, 1859; died June 22, 1898. He married (2) Maud Hamilton. He died Nov. 11, 1909. No children by second marriage.

William Guthrie, (p. 231) youngest son of John Guthrie and Esther Dunn, was born March 22, 1810, in East Brandywine Township, Chester County, Pa. He was a saddler by trade, but spent most of his life on a farm on the banks of the Brandywine. He married (1) March 28, 1839, Rachel Harris, born Sept. 9, 1812, daughter of Robert Harris, of Welsh descent. She died July 29, 1850.
William Guthrie married (2) about 1852 Mary Witherow Moore, born Sept. 30, 1825, in Caln Township, Chester County, Pa. She was the daughter of Moore. Her grandfather (whether paternal or maternal not stated) was a soldier in the Revolutionary War and passed through the privations and hardships of Valley Forge. The tradition of his descendants corroborates the familiar account of the sufferings from hunger and cold which the Continental soldiers endured there. They say that the soldiers having no socks or shoes tied up their feet in old rags and left blood stains on the frozen ground and snow as they walked. They tell of a squad of soldiers passing a house just as a woman threw out some potato parings and that the men fought in their eagerness to get at them. Mrs. Guthrie's grandfather secured one very small potato which he ate and afterward was wont to tell that nothing ever tasted any sweeter or better to him.
Mary (Moore) Guthrie died Dec. 10, 1888.'" William Guthrie died Jan. 22, 1894, in the St. Agnes Hospital, Philadelphia, Pa. Both are buried in the cemetery of the East Brandywine Baptist Church.

portunities there. He went to Iowa shortly before or soon after the beginning of the Civil War. He enlisted in Company B, 13th Iowa Infantry and served in the war. Afterwards he returned to Pennsylvania eventually making his home in Camden, N. J. He was a blacksmith by trade.
Robert Harris Guthrie married (1) about 1875, Catherine John,
sister to Evan John who married Robert's sister. She was born 185 ; died June, 1889. He married (2) Dec. 1, 1890, Sadie Tigh, who was born in 1858. She was the daughter of Tigh and
Mary Robinson. The latter was born in Ireland.

He enlisted Aug. 19, 1861, and was Captain of Company B, 11th Regiment, Pennsylvania Cavalry. He was mustered out of the Army Aug. 13, 1865, at Richmond, Va. Esther Ann (Guthrie) Ford died April 13, 1878, aged 34 years, I month, 8 days. Capt. John Ford married (2) Feb. 11, 1892, Lillie G; he died Oct. 2, 1919. No children by second marriage. His widow resides in Honey Brook, Pa.

Mary Josephine Guthrie, Q. 245) sixth child of William Guthrie and Rachel Harris, married Hamilton Gibson. She died August, 1921, at Petrolia, Pa. They had one son, Balou Gibson.
William (first name was originally Zachary, p. 245) Taylor Guthrie, seventh child of William Guthrie and Rachel Harris, as a youth near the close of the Civil War served in Company E of the 14th Pennsylvania Construction Corps. Afterwards he went to the western part of the state and worked in the early oil fields of Pennsylvania, becoming an expert well driller. Later he became an independent producer. He married Jan. 8, 1873, in Butter County, Pa., Sarah DO McKisson, who was born June 2, 1852, in Peachville, Butler County, Pa., daughter of John McKisson and Mary Barnhart. Mr. Guthrie is the only surviving child of William Guthrie and Rachel Harris, (1931) and with his wife lives in McDonald, Pa.

He remained in Jasper County for three years attending school and teaching school, after which he went to Des Moines, Iowa, and was employed by the J. D. Seeberger Wholesale Hardware Company. Later he removed to Le Verne, Kossuth County, Iowa, and engaged in the hardware business conducting it store in this place for seventeen years. About 1910 he joined the Cutler Hardware Company, of Waterloo, Iowa, continuing with them for about fifteen years.
He married Nov. 27, 1883, Mrs. Nettie Brown, nee Trainor, who was born at Rising Sun, Polk County, Iowa, Jan. 22, 1866. She was reared at Odell in the same county, the family later moving to Des Moines. She died in Waterloo, Iowa, Oct. 15, 1924. No children.
Rachel Blanche Guthrin (p. 246) fifth child of William Guthrie and Mary Moore, married April 26, 1894, Andrew Bailey, who was born Nov. 24, 1843, in Honeybrook Township, Chester County, Pa. She was his second wife. The parents of Andrew Bailey, with their three other childrentwo boys and a girlmoved with Andrew to Maryland when he was one year old. They lived in Maryland for about three years then returned to their former neighborhood in Honeybrook Township. Andrew Bailey died April 17, 1925, at his home, the Wallace Inn Farm, near Glenmoore, Pa.

Florence Bertha (Guthrie) Witt died May 7, 1907. Mr. Witt married (2) January, 1908, Grace Bullock. He died Oct. 12, 1924, in Spring City, Pa. Subjoined is a notice of his death which appeared in a local paper.
"Retiring in apparent perfect health Saturday night, John S. Witt, President of the Spring City School Board and Superintendent of the First Reformed Sunday School, was seized with a heart attack at 4 o'clock yesterday morning and died before aid could be administered. Mr. Witt was 56 yrs., 3 mos., and 7 days old.
"He was a resident of Spring City practically his entire life and was well known and highly respected. For thirty years he was Superintendent of the Reformed Sunday School and a member of the Church. He served the School Board for many years, most of which he was President. He was connected with the Crescent Corrugated Box Company, Philadelphia, as a salesman for many years and commuted between Philadelphia and his home daily." Etc., etc.

ROBERT GUTHRIE, presumptive son of James Guthrie, of Chester County, Pa., (see p. 216) bears all the earmarks of being the brother Robert of the James Guthrie, whose line has just been represented. There is danger of confusing this Robert with Robert, the son of Robert Guthrie, of Carlisle Pa. They were of about the same age and both lived for a time in Washington County, Pa. This Robert Guthrie appears to have been the first of the two to move into western Pennsylvania.'" Robert Guthrie, Jr., of Carlisle, did not take up land in Washington County, Pa., until 1785. (See p. 311).
Robert Guthrie married May 4, 1778, in Pennsylvania, Miss Elizabeth Jane Caldwell, daughter of William Caldwell.' They were living in Washington County, Pa., in 1793, but between that date

and the year 1800, removed to Harrison County, Ohio, settling about eight miles south of Cadiz. The distance traversed in the removal was about seventyfive miles.

Of these information is at hand concerning the youngestWil
liam Guthrie Finney. He married and in 1861 moved
with his family to Washington, D. C., having accepted an appoint
ment in the U. S. Treasury Department. His only known child is
James Rea Finney, who was born Feb. 25, 1846, in Cadiz, Ohio.
He earned his first money by selling the Evening Star in Washing
ton and well remembers the vivid impressions made on his mind by
the stirring events in the conflict between the North and the South.

"He was present in the old Ford Theatre the night President Lincoln was shot and remembers how his family sat up until morning waiting for additional news of that tragedy. Too young to serve in the Army during the early part of the war, Mr. Finney enlisted with Company K, 170th Ohio Infantry and served with Sheridan in his Shenandoah campaign.
"In 1869 Mr. Finney left Washington to accept a position in the United States Branch Mint, in Carson City, Nev. Later he lived in Kansas City two years and afterwards went to his old home in Ohio where he engaged successfully in the grocery business for twenty years.9~
Returning to Washington he was employed for twentyseven years in the Office of Claims and Control, Internal Revenue Bureau, retiring about 1922. He married in 1875, a Miss Brindley, who was born March 8, 1850, in Harrison County, Ohio. She was the tenth of twelve children of John Brindley, Sr., a prominent farmer of that county. The Finneys celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in 1925 at their home at 1K4 Gerard St., Washington, D. C. They have a son, Val. C. Finney, of Washington and a daughter who married Maurice Alder Beckham, of Washington.
Robert Caldwell Guthrie (p. 253) was a soldier in the War of 1812. He married Feb. 15, 1809, Jane Cunningham. They lived in Harrison and Tuscarawas Counties, Ohio. He died Feb. 18, 1854. Their descendants have as an able and careful chronicler, George B. Guthrie, who, in the main, has compiled the following representation of them.

David Guthrie (p. 254) marked Nov 17, 1842, Margaret Moore, who was born Feb. 13, 1821 They moved to Iowa about 1853, traveling overland in a covered wagon. They settled at Winthrop, in Buchanan County. David Guthrie was a prominent pioneer in the county. He was an early member of the Old Hickory Grove Presbyterian Church, in which he was an influential leader. He adhered strictly to the scriptural worship of God by voicing his praise in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, and opposed the use in the church of instrumental music. For a number of years he was a Justice of the Peace and many came to him for counsel, or for judgment in cases of dispute. He died Feb. 12, 1882; his widow, April 18, 1893. Both are buried at Winthrop. Their four eldest children were born in Harrison County, Ohio, the others in Buchanan County, Iowa.

William Guthrie, (p. 254) son of Robert Caldwell Guthrie and Jane Cunningham, married June 15, 1843, Isabella Leard, who was born Sept. 13, 1820. They moved from Ohio to near Bloomington, Ill., in 1853, lived there until 1867 when they moved to near Cheney, Kan. Isabella Leard Guthrie died June 1, 1900, at the latter place and William Guthrie died Aug. 26, 1905, at Lewis, Kan. Both are buried at Cheney.

Albert Guthrie (p. 258) served as a private in Company K, 93rd Illinois Infantry throughout the Civil War. His health was greatly impaired thereafter. lie married June 26, 1866, Mary Oldham, who died October, 1880. He died July, 1889.

Martha Jane Guthrie (p. 258) was born in Deersville, Ohio. She married July 17, 1864 (or 1865), Richard Quigley, who was born Aug. 18, 184 , at Cadiz, Ohio. They live at Morris, Minn.

David Addison Guthrie (above) was born near Bloomington, Ill. In 1881 he sought Ids fortune in the west, locating first at Wichita, Kan., and afterwards at Cheney. A year later he moved to Montezuma and took up one hundred and sixty acres of land. Later still he moved to Edwards County, Kan. He married April 5, 1893, Gertrude Bell Hodson, who was born Nov. 11, 1872, in Reno County, Kan.
