"Mrs. Guthrie was the true type of Southern womanhood, generous and hos itable anti ever ready to help those in need. She spent her girlhood in Virginia and lived there during the Civil War, in which her seven nearest male relatives gave their lives for the Confederate cause. She united with the Methodist Church in early life and was an active worker in the church until her health prevented activity, but her interest in church affairs was always alert and enthusiastic. It can truly be said that in the training of her family as well as in her church and social circles, she did her work nobly, and now 'her children rise up and call her blessed.' She leaves a host of friends in Columbia and also in her old home in St. Charles and Warren Counties, to mourn her passing."

In 1820, he received his grant from President Monroe. In April, 1821, he set out from St. Charles County in a two wheeled wooden wagon drawn by Indian ponies. The wheels were made by cutting fairly thin crosssections from a tolerably round scycamore log. They were held on the axles by wooden pins. Amo ng others he had a son, William Guthrie, who was a large land owner in Boyle County, Ky. He had several children. He died about 186L He had a son, James, who was a soldier (Confederate) in the Civil War. Another son was T. H. Guthrie and another, the youngest, was W. W. Guthrie, of Danville, who died about 1924. A daughter of William Guthrie married a man named Mills and moved to Missouri. She died and he married a second time a lady named Guthrie.
William Guthrie, Jr., (above) had also a son Richard, and it seems one named David.
Mrs. Claud May, formerly of Danville, Ky., is a great great granddaughter of William Guthrie, Jr.
Adam Guthrie, son of William and Elizabeth Guthrie, has not been traced. There was an Adam Guthrie in North Carolina at an early date, but probably too early to be this man. Three Guthrie brothers are mentioned as settling in Boyle County, Ky., and this would seem to include Adam. We cannot be sure of this, however, as the three might have included Robert who lived in Madison County, Ky.
This Adam Guthrie of South Carolina must not be confused with Adam Guthrie, the father of James Guthrie, of Bardstown, Ky., who was an entirely different individual.
JAMES GUTHRIE
James Guthrie, supposed to have been the James who moved from Connecticut to Chester County, Pa., was contemporaneous with
216 BOOK 11
Robert Guthrie. (See p. 78 and 169.) We have from the early, unpublished tax lists of this county"Jas. Guthrie, 17491763, West Caln Township." This James seems to have been a patriarch, and the James, who married a Miss Bussell.
Children, (alphabetical order):
1. James Guthrie, b. about 1731, in N. Ireland. (Below)
2. Robert Guthrie, (p. 252).
3. Thomas Guthrie, (p. 267).
4. William Guthrie, (p. 301).
JAMEs GUTHRIE, (above) presumptive son of James Guthrie and Bussell, was but eighteen years of age when the first James appeared on the tax lists of Chester County in West Caln Township. Obviously then we have two James Guthries and since there is a continuity of the first James in the tax lists on down to 1763, it is natural to infer that these related to the same individual.
According to some descendants, James was one of three brothers. He settled in Chester County, his brother William in Lancaster County and his brother Robert in Ohio. Other descendants state that there were four brothers, the additional one, not named, went south. This account tallies well with the above arrangement, Thomas, of course being the one of the brothers who went south.
It is said by some of the descendants that their branch of the family was pure Scotch, with the exception of one Irish strain which was introduced when the ancestor, who migrated to Ireland about the year 1700, married an Irish lady, the daughter of an Irish lord. The first record of a James Guthrie in America, which can be definitely applied to him is dated 1765." He had a farm, was a storekeeper and tailor.'"
Descendants say that James Guthrie collected a band of neighboring men and went to the aid of the Continental Army, probably at the not distant battle of the Brandywine. No official record of his services in the Revolution has been found.
James Guthrie' married Ann ,' who died in 1807. He died Oct. 24, 1799; both are buried in the cemetery of the old Brandywine Manor Presbyterian Church, now known as the "Forks of the Brandywine." His grave is marked by one of the quaint old tombstones of his time.2n

William Guthrie,' son of James and Ann Guthrie, (p. 216) served in the Chester County Militia during the Revolutionary War. He was an influential man in his community, at one time and another owned several tracts of land in Brandywine Township.
Reared a Presbyterian, when Methodism spread through the country on the crest of the religious revival, which ended the deadly aftermath of the Revolution, he became a member of the nearby Hopewell Methodist Episcopal Church. He was a trustee of this church and was known for his zeal and piety.

James Batten Guthrie, (p. 217) oldest child and only son of William Guthrie and Mary Battin, kept a store where Guthriesville now stands. In 1825 he purchased land from his father on which the village was located.' In 1833 the first post office was located in his store, he was the first Post Master and the place was named Guthriesville after him.
In the spring of 1835, he heard of a sale of land to be held in Franklin County, Pa., and desiring to improve his circumstances, he determined to attend it. He set out as the appointed time drew near and reaching Harrisburg on the evening of the day preceeding the sale, he learned that the Cumberland Valley Railroad, which at that time ran up the valley as far as Chambersburg, operated on a very uncertain schedule. Sometimes the train would reach Chambersburg at noon, at other times night would fall before it arrived there. As the sale was to take place at 2:30 P. M., he decided not to lake chances with the railroad and set out on foot to reach the place of the sale near Scotland, Franklin County, Pa., a distance of fifty miles from Harrisburg. He walked the entire distance, arrived at Scotland at 2:00 P. M. and purchased the land." The following year he purchased two other tracts of land from the same parties, one of 76 acres, the other 33 acres plus, making a farm of some 215 acres on which he lived the remainder of his life.
Married "by the Rev. Thomas Dunn, D.M.D., on the 3rd of April, A. D. 1813, James B. Guthrie of Brandywine Township, Chester County, to Isabel McMullen, of Ashton, Delaware County, Pa." '
WILLIAM OF JAMES, JR. 219
The McMullens (or McMullins) were of Irish ancestry. The "Me" was dropped from the name of this branch of the family shortly after her marriage and descendants of her paternal family are generally known by the name of Mullen.
James B. Guthrie was a member and trustee of the Hopewell Methodist Episcopal Church" and after moving to Franklin County was an active member of the Methodist Episcopal Church of Greenvillage, Pa.
His wife Isabella was a woman of spirit, independence and, thought old Bro. X, of far too much personal pride for a Methodist, and so he used to tell her in the very frank and open way of the old circuit riders.

Shippensburg, Pa.
He was made the administrator of the estate of his father, Sept. 24, 1845, and soon after the final settlement was made removed to Marion County, Ohio. The subjoined article appeared in the "Pastor's Treasury," 1881, and is worthy of a place here.

James Meninger Guthrie (above) served in the Civil War for the Union in the U. S. Navy as gunner's mate on the Grampus and Rattler. He served also on the Great Western and was surgeon's steward on the Champion. His discharge paper dated Aug. 23, 1864, states that he enlisted for one year, but it is noted on the reverse side that he continued in the service of the Champion until the 14th of June, 1865.
For a few years after the close of the war he engaged in the printing and publishing business, but feeling a call to the Gospel ministry, he prepared himself by studying at Ohio Wesleyan College, Delaware, Ohio, from which institution he graduated. He preached first in the Methodist Church, later entering the Baptist ministry, he graduated from Crozier Theological Seminary in 1876. He was an earnest, winning minister. In later life he labored under a growing handicap of deafness resulting from his service as cannoneer during the war. He was a vigorous, active man and maintained a youthful spirit to the end. For several years immediately preceding his death he was greatly interested in the history of his family. He was one of the movers in organizing the Guthrie Family Reunion Association of Guthriesville, and was its first president. A coincidence in this is the fact that had the old law of primogeniture obtained he would have been the hereditary chief of the clan, that is of the descendants of James Guthrie, of Brandywine Township.
