Toby
Hughes is of Cherokee/Creek ancestry and is a fluent speaker,
he also reads and writes in the Cherokee language. Unlike most speakers
of today, Cherokee was Toby’s first language. While being raised
by his full-blood Cherokee grandfather, Toby was taught the traditional
ways of his people. At an early age he was exposed to the English
language, and quickly became his grandfather’s translator. Toby
was born and raised in Westville, Oklahoma. Although the Cherokee
language differs from community to community he has the ability
to converse with all true speakers. He has maintained his knowledge
of the Cherokee language and culture throughout the years and now
has chosen to have parts of his knowledge recorded and preserved
for future reference for those who have interest in the Cherokee
ways.
